1. What is ZipToNet and what services are provided?

ZipToNet is a remote data back up system capable of backing up computer data files typically found on the hard drives of a large number of PC's (personal or laptop computers), physically located in a WAN (wide area network).  A WAN can be a group of PC's operating off a common network server or a stand alone PC.  The computer must be connected to the Internet by an Internet service provider.  In order for maximum reliability, a true ISP should

A backup can be completed daily to the remote storage facility via the Internet utilizing standard phone lines and an Internet connection of at least 14,400 bps.  The backup is performed automatically on a preset schedule, typically during the nighttime hours.  The backed up data are stored remotely at a secure off site facility and these data files can be retrieved over the same phone lines in the event a backed up file needs to be restored.

2. What are the many advantages of ZipToNet’s System over conventional tape backup and Floppy/Zip systems?

First of all, all conventional backups require "conscious action" as some person has to remember to do the backup and remember to backup the proper files.  It must also be done on a very frequent basis to assure the needed data is available in the event of data loss.  With ZipToNet, the process is automatic and the files backed up have been selected during set up with no judgment calls required by the user when the back up occurs.

Secondly, conventional backup methods do not protect against such potential occurrences such as computer theft, fire, employee tampering and even natural disasters unless the backed up data is manually transported off the site on a regular basis.  ZipToNet assures automatically that the backed up data is safe at an off site location.

3. Does the ZipToNet System affect any other backups such as tape or zip drives?

No, ZipToNet data backup is independent of any other manual backup medium that may be in place. It will however disable other automated back-up systems that may be installed already on your system, however other automatic back-up systems are no longer required when using ZipToNet as we offer a less costly and more reliable system, requiring no manual intervention, such as changing tapes and disks each time.

4. What if I want to restore another computer if my primary computer cannot be repaired?

Yes, the data can be easily restored provided you have an internet connection, you account name and your Security PIN Number.

5. Do you back up my program files?

Your program files are easy to restore (you have the disks).  When you download our software on your system you select which directories you wish to be scanned each day to asses whether new files have been created or modified. Program files can also be backed-up provided the correct directory is selected  so that if you make changes or additions to your programs, these too can also be backed up with the ZipToNet Software. Alternatively if you want certain programme or application files within a selected directory excluded from the back-up, simply enter their file extension in the window provide e.g. .exe.

6. Could I actually lose data and need to restore from the off site facility?

This answer can only be based on research that clearly shows 94% of computer users have experienced a loss of data in the past year.  The majority of losses were shown to be caused by equipment failure( such as a hard drive failure) or operator error.

The cost to restore lost files manually can be devastating not only in financial terms but also in lost production - whether direct or indirect.  As a matter of fact, in 1995, the data "disaster recovery" market size in America alone exceeded $1 billion dollars for just one year.

7. Is my data really safe at an off site facility?

Yes.  Security of data files is a primary concern to all computer users. ZipToNet addresses security with the most complete solution available, implementing multiple levels in the software.  These include:

·         An embedded end-user software generated ID code, which ensures that only the registered end-user's dial into the ZipToNet.

·         A unique Security PIN number for each end user that ensures that only the original end-user can restore and have access to their files.

·         A 64 Bit unique data compression algorithm, applied to all backed up files at the PC-level and enforced until a file or files are restored and decompressed on the user's PC.  This ensures that the end user's file remains unintelligible for the entire period that they are off the PC.

·         A proprietary communications protocol involving variable length packets prevents tapping into the data transmission.

·         A system design that ensures all communications links are initiated by the end user PC, not the backup server.  This ensures that there is no dial in access to the end user's PC.

·         A Unique system that enables you select whether the system should carry out a complete back-up each time of whether you simply want to back-up just new or modified files within the selected directory at each time of backing-up.

·         A file omission option that allows the end user to keep specified files out of the backup process.  You only back up the files you select.

8. Can the ZipToNet Data Backup Service provide service to local area networks (LANS)?

Yes, depending on the operating system in place, the service can be offered to peer-to-peer LAN network users, without additional cost, with the added security of off site storage.

9. What operating systems are supported?

Windows NT, 95 & 98 which represents nearly 90% of the PC user market.

10. What if the telephone transmission fails during backup?

Not a problem.  The system has been designed with every possible contingency in mind.  If the modem connection is broken, for any reason, the client software will call back to perform the data backup.  The process will begin at the point the transmission stopped.

12. How long is my data stored for online access?

Unless a file is deleted from the end user's system, the data is held indefinitely or for the period of time you have selected on the Set-up menu, provided you settle your monthly account in accordance with the standard terms and conditions of the License Agreement.

13. How do I know the what and when's of my back up?

The end user gets a log of files backed up at completion of the daily backup.  The name of the file, the time, date that the file was created and the date it was backed-up are also shown on the log.  The central server also maintains a log of all files held at The ZipToNet. This information can be printed from your computer and is only available to you.

14. What about Viruses?

If your data is corrupted by a virus attack, ZipToNet enables you to restore all your data prior to the date in which your data was corrupted, unlike other backup mediums which simply hold the virus and restore it back onto your hard drive along with your data!

All data to be backed up at the storage facility is zipped prior to it being sent to ZipToNet. Therefore, it cannot be corrupted by viruses whilst in storage. I.e. what you send us is what you get back on restoring those files. If the data you back-up is corrupted with a virus, it will be zipped and stored with us in the same way as you sent it. Viruses can therefore not corrupt other compressed and encrypted zipped data packets.

16. How Will My Backups Occur?

After the ZipToNet software has been installed, provided your PC is left on, ZipToNet’s System will automatically perform daily backups during the night. Alternatively you can select the data to backed-up much more frequently. If the computer is turned off, when it is re-booted, it will automatically search and recognise any new or modified files and begin the remote back-up process. During the backup process, changed files are copied, encrypted, compressed and sent via your Internet connection to ZipToNet.

18. How long will my backups take?

The ZipToNet System backs up files selected by you. Therefore, the first backup may take considerable time (even up to more than one night). Once the initial "snapshot" of your PC(s) has been sent to ZipToNet, your subsequent daily backups take only minutes depending upon how much data has been added or changed from the previous days backup. You ALWAYS have an accurate image of your PC stored in a secure, remote facility.  This is especially important if you need to restore an entire hard drive.  By having a complete image, there is no guesswork and the restoration is completed hassle free.
